Whidbey
Island Information
Whidbey
Island is one of the most beautiful places in the
Pacific Northwest. Approximately four million
visitors a year enjoy the incredible Deception Pass Park
views and the tranquility of the island's rural
character. The central location of Whidbey
Island is ideal for treks to the Cascade or Olympic
mountains (hiking, camping, or snow sports), desert, beaches,
the San Juan Islands, Seattle ("The Emerald
City"), Vancouver B.C., or Alaska.
One
of the largest islands within the contiguous United
States, Whidbey Island is approximately 62 miles long.
Oak Harbor (closest to NAS Whidbey Island) was
incorporated in 1915 and has grown to be the largest
city (others are Coupeville, Freeland, Langley, and
Clinton) on the island. In addition to
Whidbey Island's longtime pioneer families, Oak Harbor
has a sizeable retired population, including many
military veterans, who have chosen to make Whidbey Island
their permanent home.
